Community leader: Vital to have Chinese representation in govt

KUCHING: Temenggong Lu Kim Yong has urged Chinese community leaders to help drum into their community the need to have good Chinese representation in the government for continued progress.
Lu, who was elected president of Kuching Chinese Community Leaders Association yesterday, opined that no one wanted to see racial polarisation in the government after the fast-approaching 13th general election.
“It isn’t that we are not supporting the two-party system, but we shall see to it that a balanced representation and development can be carried on.
“We do not want to see the Chinese being marginalised or left out of the government. Hence, it is part of our obligations to ensure that such a scenario will not take place,” he said at the association’s annual general meeting here yesterday.
On another matter, Lu said Chinese community leaders must be willing and have the capability to serve.
“Only when you have the willingness to serve would you seek no reward. Apart from that, it is equally essential for you to be capable of serving the community.
“Towards this end, you will need strong family support. Lucky for us that many of our children are grown-ups, thereby enabling us to have more time to serve selflessly.”
He hoped all community leaders would uphold the spirit of altruism for the benefit of society atlarge.
The meeting yesterday saw the election of 16 new committee members, including Lu.
Acting president of the association, Voon Kim Fah, proposed Lu to be the incoming president and his proposal was unanimously accepted by all present.
The association will call for an election of office-bearers at a later date.
Before Lu concluded the meeting, a member proposed that Voon, who is a former Pemanca for Batu Kawa area, be appointed an honorary president to the association.
Voon had assumed the role of acting president following the passing of Lu’s predecessor Temenggong Sim Kian Soon in July last year.
“Voon deserves the honour, given his vast experience and tremendous contributions to the Chinese community. We will look into the proposal,” said Lu.
